La storia ruota attorno a Elena Gilbert, bella e popolare adolescente della cittadina di Mystic Falls.Subita da poco la perdita dei genitori, Elena e il fratello Jeremy vengono presi in adozione dalla giovane zia Jenna, che nonostante la giovane età si prenderà cura di loro come figli.La vicenda segna i ragazzi ,sopratutto Jeremy. Al rientro ,dopo le vacanze estive, al liceo di Mystic Falls arriva un nuovo ragazzo, che fa perdere immediatamente la testa a molte ragazze: Stefan Salvatore. Neppure Elena resiste al fascino del nuovo arrivato e fra i due scocca il colpo di fulmine. Ma Stefan nasconde un segreto: è un vampiro.
